YouTube “musicians”

Groups that only or primarily do covers on YouTube are a problem.

I heard Halocene and First2Eleven try to cover What The Hell and couldn’t give them half the time I would normally. Avril is deceptively technical and they don’t even try to match her skill with that song.

Shit pisses me off how these vocalists try to be Tarja Turunen or Simone Simons with auto tune and other shit like key changes or tempo changes.

It’s possible to make a cover better than the original. Emmylou Harris did it with Pancho and Lefty. No one has heard of the original writer. Her version was such a banger Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard did their own version. I don’t really follow country, but the song is a banger about a Mexican revolution hero. Cracks me up hearing country musicians say “federale” though given the political environment of the genre.

But the YouTube covers aren’t that. They ignore the fact no one is listening to Taylor Swift for her vocals. Mind the comparison because Mark Knopfler is a hell of a guitarist, but aside from his finger-style riffs and solos, his singing sucks. His songwriting is in places similar to hers too. No one listens to Sultans of Swing for Mark’s range. It’s the guitar and the story song nature of the lyrics.

I get people don’t take music theory seriously and I kinda don’t either. I mostly just listened to a lot of stuff about the great composers and use music theory to write music. If I don’t write it down I won’t know what I’m playing. I’m too lazy to train my ear like Rick Beato, and trying to keep track as i improvise doesn’t work well.

But we can’t ignore the basics man. You can’t go around taking the humor out of classics like Fat Lip by slowing them down or removing the humor from an Avril Lavigne song cause she’s deceptively clever or the double ending of Bad Guy or so on.

Then again idk why I’m ranting. Audra complained about how little time she had to learn songs after agreeing to sing on tv. Honestly, idk a single song nearly as well as people think. That’s why I very openly am not in a band or playing covers on YouTube.

People don’t catch it unless they’re paying attention cause I can mask it, but they’d start paying attention if I went to YouTube or on tv. Would it still be cool? Maybe, but only cause I try to avoid obvious changes i guess.

But my company is doing way better than I expected already. Way better than I would’ve expected or anyone would’ve expected. It’s not normal at all for a company with $0 marketing to get this much attention in under a week.

So don’t have to like my opinions, but I’m right.
