For my family and me it was and still is computer off, and power and data lines unplugged from the wall the moment the rumbles in the distance start. And no, UPSes and especially those power strip 'surge protectors' with the 10 cent shunts in them and probally still come with that scam $100,000 equipment "guarantee" aren't going to protect your equipment if lightning hits close enough and enters the service lines to your home.

It's amazing how many people are not only keeping expensive PC equipment up and running during an electrical storm, but using wired earbuds and keeping in contact with wired mice and keyboards. There is a good reason why we were told not to use a corded land line telephone or touch still plugged in electrical appliances or plumbing fixtures during an electrical storm. It's not some urban legend, or "wives tale"; people have been killed in this manner and these incidents were documented. All lightning saftey websites say this same thing.

You may be asking why radio stations, office buildings, emergency dispatch centers, telephone and internet data centers, ect.. don't shut down their equipment during a storm. It's because they usually have an expensive and well engineered lightning protection system costing thousands, sometimes even millions of dollars for their equipment. Most homes don't even have the most basic protection to deal with run of the mill power surges, and what little there is lightning will happily blast right on through as if they were never installed.

That plug in crap you get at Best Buy or Home Depot isn't going to save your butt in a close strike
