Worst atrocities committed by Christian extremists

Worst atrocities committed by Christian extremists

1. The Crusades (1095-1274): A series of military campaigns launched by European Christians to conquer and control Muslim territories in the Middle East. It resulted in widespread violence, massacres, and pillaging of cities.

2. Slavery and Human Trafficking: Many Christian churches and organizations have historically supported slavery and human trafficking, which still persists today in many parts of the world.

3. Witch hunts and burnings (14th - 17th centuries): During this period, thousands of women were accused of practicing witchcraft and executed by burning at stake. This was done under the belief that witches posed a threat to Christianity.

4. Inquisition (14th - 18th centuries): An institution established by the Catholic Church to root out heretics and non-believers. It led to the torture and execution of millions of people across Europe.

5. Genocide against Native Americans (late 15th century onwards): European settlers systematically destroyed indigenous communities and cultures through forced removal, displacement, and murder.

6. Rwanda genocide (1994): The killing of up to one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus by radical Hutu militias and government forces. The genocide was fueled by ethnic tensions and religious differences between the two groups.

7. Guatemala genocide (1970s-1980s): A civil war fought between the Guatemalan government and leftist rebels. The government used military tactics such as "scorched earth" policies and massacres to suppress the rebellion.

8. South Sudan conflict (2013-present): A civil war in South Sudan that has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions more. Religious differences have played a significant role in fueling the conflict.

9. Sri Lanka Easter bombings (April 2019): A series of suicide bomb attacks targeting churches and hotels in Sri Lanka killed over 250 people, mostly Christians. The attack was attributed to a local Islamic extremist group.

10. Nigeria violence (ongoing): A longstanding conflict between Boko Haram, an Islamist terrorist organization, and the Nigerian government has led to widespread violence, including kidnappings, beheadings, and forced marriages.

11. Crimes against humanity in Democratic Republic of Congo (1998-2003): A period of intense fighting between various armed groups in DRC resulted in massive human rights violations, including rape, mutilation, and slavery.

12. Attacks on abortion clinics and providers: Christian extremists have been responsible for numerous violent attacks on abortion clinics and doctors who provide abortions. This includes the murder of Dr. George Tiller in 2009.

13. Persecution of homosexuals: Many Christian extremists believe that homosexuality is a sin and advocate for its criminalization or persecution. They have been responsible for numerous incidents of harassment, assault, and even murder of LGBTQ individuals.

14. Violence against women: Some Christian extremists promote gender roles and traditional family values that can lead to violence against women. For example, some fundamentalist groups practice "biblical" wife-beating as a form of discipline.

15. Climate change denialism: Many Christian conservatives reject scientific evidence about climate change and argue that it is not caused by human activity. This position puts future generations at risk and contradicts biblical teachings about stewardship of the earth.

#1 is incorrect. The radical Muslims had rampaged through Europe, raping and pillaging European citizens. The Crusades were about Christians removing the chaos from their homeland. They went in to recapture their territories, while also trying to eradicate the radicals.

#2 is misleading. The whole world has historically supported slavery and human trafficking, which persists today in many parts of the world. It is not just a select group of people. People of every race and ethnicity have gone through slavery at some point in human history.

#3 is correct.

#4 is correct, but should be clarified that it was the Spanish Inquisition under the control of the kings of Spain (1478-1834).

#5 is misleading. Initially, the Native Americans and European settlers were friends. They would share food and teach each other many techniques. The first form of "genocide" was not by the settlers; rather, it was from diseases that spread from Europe as more people arrived. Over time, the Europeans came across more violent natives whom they called savages. From that point onward, the same game that the native tribes had with each other had a new member, who just so happened to be more powerful and played the game better, eventually conquering all of the land as the end goal.

#6 is correct.

I don't know enough about #7 - 10

#11 is correct. They still have problems to this day.

#12 is misleading. The vast majority of attacks come from the opposing side who are in favor of abortions. While, yes, there have been a few occurrences of attacks on abortion clinics and providers, to put it in a list of the worst atrocities is a little melodramatic.

#13 is incorrect. The people you are referencing are those who follow Islam, but even then it's overstated.

#14 is only true if you are talking about centuries ago. While the concept of gender roles and traditional family values are still practiced, they are oftentimes mutually agreed upon by the household.

#15 is misleading. The conservatives do not reject science. They are merely accepting all forms of science rather than just the one-sided view that comes from the left. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that the idea that climate change is unprecedented is a hoax; however, that does not mean that they are 100% correct. It just means that the science is not settled.

"There is plenty of evidence to suggest that the idea that climate change is unprecedented is a hoax;"

Earth has gone through ice ages and extreme climate changes since the asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs. But what we are going through now, it's hard to believe that man didn't play some role in causing it, or making the problem worse when stuff like "millions of tons of X was dumped into the atmosphere" gets mentioned, and that's just one thing out of so many things man dumped up there. The Earth is big enough that the human mind can't really fully comprehend it's vastness, but it's not so big that man can't do some really serious, long term damage to it.
