Just walk away

Most of us have been rendered so pathetically lonely and depressed that, if only at a level we do not recognize, we are desperate for any sad, half-assed relationship that will make us feel like life is worth a second thought. I didn't recognize it in myself for decades but now I do. I recognized it in other people a lot faster, of course, but I can see now that I was never any different.

But after what I have just gone through, I intend to live by this advice: if you don't like it, don't accept it.

The first time somebody tries to tell you that you aren't attractive enough and have to do this and that to look better for them, tell them to get the fuck out.

The first time somebody tries to argue with you about something trivial and stupid, or even something of some consequence but which clearly isn't going anywhere, tell them to walk.

The first time somebody accuses you of something you did not do and would not do, tell them to go fuck themselves.

The first time somebody questions out loud whether the relationship is worth it, tell them they just answered their own question and can go to hell.

Seriously, life is short. Don't waste your time or energy on people who are just looking to create problems and drama, which sadly is a shocking proportion of the population. But if you're going to find someone who actually knows how to be an adult with basic morality and consideration, you have to weed through the rest in a hurry. Don't worry about rejecting a good person over an innocent mistake. If you've been with someone for 6 months and they haven't done anything I mentioned above, okay, then offer a LITTLE leniency. Allow for an asshole-like "mistake" maybe once quarterly. But really a decent person with enough capacity to even date meaningfully is going to stay on their toes. If you're a decent person yourself, you deserve someone who lives by high standards. And if you're not such a decent person, well, get to work, because everybody else on earth can read this just like you can.
