Why does every white american want to be one? Boo hoo they had the trail of tears. The Potawatomis had the trail of death, but the firekeepers of the three fires confederacy also had clever leaders who used the USA's own laws against them.
The indian removal act had a provision that stated, "Indians who are catholic are not savages." So they had a man convert to Catholicism. Bro walked into a local church and asked a priest for a black coat. They converted him to Catholicism, but told him he needed to move anyway.
Not only did he refuse to leave he paid the colonists money for "their land", so that under USA law the Potawatomis would own the land that they had settled well before the USA. The army still tried to make them leave their land under the Indian Removal Act.
That leader took the issue to the courts, presented all his evidence, and the Potawatomi were allowed to sit on their land. Look it up, the Potawatomi trail of death had 42 deaths. The ottawa and chippewa largely hid in the area, but the Potawatomis were allowed to sit on their land.
Don't get the idea that the Ottawa or Chippewa were wussies either though. They're the other two fires of the three fires confederacy. Chief Pontiac put together a makeshift alliance to take on the British Empire 10 years before the US revolutionary war, and over the course of 2 years burnt down so many forts the British Empire had to recognize natives as people. Moreover, Pontiac's alliance killed like 500 colonists that the Empire ignored during negotiating a truce. The french were irrelevant even though they were in the area. Some academics say it was the straw that broke the camel's back, and is essentially where "taxation without representation" comes from. Not stamps, but murdered colonists that the Empire ignored. OTOH, had the Empire recognized agreements colonists made with local nations it never would've happened anyway.
and yet all you people ever want to be is Cherokee like that traitorous sentient pussy Markwayne. Guess it worked out great for them. They complied with the Army the whole way and ended up with more Cherokees today than at any point in history. So many Cherokees that it's one of the only nations that still enforce blood quantum instead of direct lineage.
Pro tip: A lot of nations nowadays just go off old rolls and legit ancestry records. That's how I know I'm related to actual chiefs. Well, that, and my mom being in a nation where direct lineage to a chief is required for membership. Way more badass than being Cherokee imo.
